Document tools

Every document tool, in one place.

Convert Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OpenDocument files to PDF, turn a PDF back into something you can edit, pull text out of a scan, and make a document small enough to send. Each tool below says in one line what it does; the guide underneath helps you pick the right one.

Choosing the right tool

PDF or an editable file?

Send a PDF when the reader only needs to read, sign or print: it keeps your fonts, page breaks and layout on every device, and nobody can change it by accident. Keep a Word or OpenDocument file when someone else has to edit it, because a PDF is a finished copy, not a working draft.

DOCX is Microsoft Word's format and ODT is the open format LibreOffice uses. Both open in either program, but converting gives the other person the file their program expects. The old DOC and Microsoft Works WPS formats are worth converting to DOCX before you archive them, since current programs open them less reliably every year.

How the conversions are made

Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OpenDocument files are converted to PDF with LibreOffice. HTML and Markdown are rendered by a headless Chromium browser, EPS artwork by Ghostscript, and SVG to a vector PDF, so lines and text stay sharp at any zoom.

An image converted to PDF gets a hidden text layer read by OCR, so the words in a photographed letter or receipt can be searched and copied. A PDF converted to JPG, PNG or GIF renders its first page at 150 DPI.

Getting text out of a PDF

PDF to Word rebuilds the text, paragraphs and tables of each page as an editable DOCX. PDF to Excel reads ruled tables, one sheet per page. PDF to Text gives you the words as plain text, without the page layout, which is the quickest way to quote or search a long report. PDF to Notes is different: it opens TranscriptAI, our sister product, which turns a dense PDF into a summary, notes and flashcards.

Making a document smaller

Images are what make most PDFs large. Compression rewrites them at a lower resolution and keeps the text as text, so it stays sharp and searchable. When a portal sets a hard limit, use a target size tool. Word, PowerPoint and Excel files shrink the same way: the pictures inside them are re-encoded and the text and layout are kept.

Privacy and limits

The conversions on this page run on FileWhirl's own server, and uploads are deleted after 1 hour. Each tool's own page says where its file goes, nothing is passed to a third party converter, and there is no watermark.

Free covers 10 server conversions a day, up to 100 MB a file. Pro removes the daily limit and raises the file limit to 2 GB.
