Developing a Sony ARW
ARW is Sony's RAW format — the unprocessed data straight off the sensor, with more dynamic range and none of the in-camera processing baked in. Converting to JPG develops it: the sensor pattern is demosaiced, the camera's white balance is applied, and you get a normal, shareable image that opens anywhere.
Why convert
ARW files are large and need RAW-aware software just to preview. A JPG is small, plays everywhere, and is perfect for posting, emailing or handing proofs to someone who doesn't edit RAW.
Keep your originals
The JPG bakes in exposure and white balance and discards the RAW's editing latitude. If a shot needs serious recovery of highlights or shadows, develop the ARW in Lightroom or Capture One first — and always keep the original ARW files.

What changes from ARW to JPG
ARW is a camera RAW file: the sensor's unprocessed data, with the most editing latitude. We demosaic it and apply its embedded profile to produce a standard JPG that opens anywhere and is far smaller — but no longer holds the full RAW dynamic range, so do any heavy edits before converting.
