CR2 to PNG: a lossless develop
Like converting a Canon CR2 to JPG, this develops the RAW — demosaicing the sensor data and applying the camera's white balance — but it writes the result as a lossless PNG. That means no JPEG compression artifacts and an exact, pixel-faithful copy of the developed image, which is handy when you'll keep editing it and don't want quality to erode on each save.
PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless, so the files are large — full-resolution and uncompressed. For sharing, posting or emailing, CR2 to JPG is far smaller and looks the same to the eye. Choose PNG when you want a developed copy you can edit repeatedly without generation loss.
The CR2 is still your master
Both PNG and JPG bake in the exposure and white balance chosen here. For serious edits — recovering highlights, big colour shifts — develop the original CR2 in Lightroom or Capture One, and keep those RAW files.

What changes from CR2 to PNG
CR2 is a camera RAW file: the sensor's unprocessed data, with the most editing latitude. We demosaic it and apply its embedded profile to produce a standard PNG that opens anywhere and is far smaller — but no longer holds the full RAW dynamic range, so do any heavy edits before converting.
