- Open the developer tools: press F12 in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on Windows, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac, then choose the Network tab.
- Clear the list, then add your PDF and run Sign PDF.
- Look at the requests that appear. An upload would be a request at least as large as your file; sort by size to find it.
What we saw when we did this on Merge PDF with two small PDFs: the browser fetched one script file of this site's own code (the PDF engine), and sent one message of about one kilobyte with page speed and engagement figures. No request carried either PDF, and the merged file was built and downloaded in the browser.
Common Questions
Are my files uploaded?+
No. Signing runs entirely in your browser with pdf-lib, an open source PDF engine that loads into the page. Your document and your signature never leave your device.
Is this a legally binding digital signature?+
This adds a visible signature image to the page, like signing with a pen. It is not a cryptographic digital signature with an identity certificate. For visible sign-offs, contracts and forms it's perfect; if you need certificate-based digital signing (e.g. eIDAS/PKI), use a dedicated e-signature service.
Can I sign on a phone?+
Yes. Switch to Draw and sign with your finger, or just type your name. It works on touch devices.
Where does the signature go?+
On one page you choose: the last page is picked for you. Put it in any corner or the centre, 24 points in from the edge, at a width between 10% and 60% of the page. To sign several pages, sign one, then load the signed file and sign the next. Corners follow the page as you see it, so a landscape or rotated page is signed upright in the corner you chose.
What happens to the rest of the PDF?+
Nothing is redrawn. The signature is added to the page as one image on top of what is there. In our test on a three page PDF, the text stayed selectable, a filled form field kept its value, the bookmarks were kept and the page count was unchanged. A password protected PDF is refused: remove the password with Unlock PDF first.
Is there a limit?+
No server cap, because your file is never sent to a server: free, unlimited, no signup or watermark. A very large PDF is limited by your device memory, since the whole file is opened in the browser.
