Style is great until it isn't supported
ASS is the subtitle format of choice for fansubs and karaoke because it can do so much: positioned text, custom fonts, colours, even simple animation. The downside is reach: hardware players, smart TVs, and a lot of upload pipelines only understand plain SRT, and they'll either ignore an ASS file or render it wrong. SRT throws away the styling but is accepted by essentially everything.
When to convert
Reach for SRT when you're loading subtitles onto a TV or media player, uploading to a platform that wants SRT, or just need the captions to work without fuss. If you only need a web-player format, SRT to VTT is the next step.
What we measured
We ran a test file with the common ASS features through this page and read the SRT back. Timings came out to the millisecond. A line break written as \N became a real line break. Italic and bold became <i> and <b>. Each line was wrapped in a <font> tag carrying the style's size, and its colour where it had one. Karaoke syllables were joined into plain words. Comment lines were left out. A drawing-mode shape came out as a row of coordinates, and a \h hard space stayed as written.

Common questions
Will I lose the styling?+
Most of it. Italic and bold come through as <i> and <b>. Font size and colour come through as <font> tags on every line, which many players show as styling and some ignore. Lines styled to sit at the top of the screen keep an {\an8} tag. Fonts, outlines, exact positions, movement and karaoke timing are dropped.
What should I check after converting?+
Two things we have seen in real files. Vector drawings (lines in drawing mode, used for masks and shapes) come out as rows of numbers, so delete those cues. A hard space written as \h stays as the two characters \h, so replace it with a normal space. Comment lines are left out, and overlapping lines, such as a sign over dialogue, stay as separate cues with their own times.
What's the difference between ASS and SSA?+
SSA (SubStation Alpha) is the original; ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is the newer, more capable version. We accept either and produce standard SRT.
