Getting your data back

A table in a PDF looks like data but behaves like a picture — you can't sort it, sum a column, or fix a number without retyping the whole thing. PDF to Excel reads the table's structure and rebuilds it as real spreadsheet cells, so a report, statement or invoice becomes something you can actually work with again.

How it works

We use pdfplumber, an open-source engine that detects the lines and spacing that make up a table and maps each cell to a row and column. Every page that contains tables becomes its own worksheet, so multi-page documents stay organised.

A note on messy PDFs

Table extraction is part science, part guesswork — borderless tables or unusual layouts can come out imperfect. It works best on PDFs with clearly delineated tables. If yours is scanned, run OCR first so there's text to read.

Common questions

What kind of PDF works best?+

PDFs that contain actual table data — exports from reports, bank statements, invoices and the like. The engine detects the table grid and rebuilds it as spreadsheet cells.

What if my PDF has no tables?+

If we can't find a table, we tell you so clearly instead of producing an empty file. For text-only or scanned PDFs, try PDF to Word or PDF to text instead.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?+

Scanned PDFs are images of pages, so there's no table structure to read. Run OCR first (our OCR PDF tool) to add a text layer, then convert.

Is it free and private?+

Yes — convert PDF to Excel free, no signup. Uploads go to a private bucket and auto-delete after 1 hour; files never touch a third-party converter.
