Choosing the right tool
TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2
TTF (TrueType) and OTF (OpenType) are desktop font files: you install them on Windows, macOS or Linux and every program can use them. WOFF and WOFF2 are the same font data packed for the web. They are compressed so pages load faster, and they are meant to be served by a website, not installed.
WOFF2 compresses with Brotli and is usually the smallest of the four. Every current browser supports it, so a site that serves WOFF2 alone covers nearly every visitor today. WOFF is the older web format, worth adding only as a fallback for very old browsers.
What changes, and what does not
These conversions change the container and its compression, not the font. They run on fontTools, the library type designers use, so the glyph outlines, spacing, kerning and hinting tables come back as they went in. Converting a WOFF2 back to TTF gives you a font that installs like the original.
TrueType and OpenType CFF outlines are drawn differently, so converting TTF to OTF would mean redrawing every curve. FileWhirl does not offer that conversion, because it cannot be done without changing the font.
Using a web font on your site
Upload the WOFF2 file next to your stylesheet and point an @font-face rule at it. Check the font's licence first: many desktop licences do not allow web embedding, and converting the file does not change what the licence permits.
Privacy and limits
Font conversions run on FileWhirl's own server, and uploads are deleted after 1 hour. Each tool's page says where its file goes, nothing is passed to a third party converter, and there is no watermark.
Free covers 10 server conversions a day, up to 100 MB a file. Pro removes the daily limit and raises the file limit to 2 GB.
