Worked example
A 4K colour photo to grayscale
We turned a 3840 x 2400 colour photo to grayscale in the browser. It came back as a 314,010 byte JPG of the same 3840 x 2400 pixels in 98 milliseconds, without uploading anything.
Measured on 19 October 2026 by running this page's in-browser engine on our own test files.
What it does not do
It does not make a 1-bit, pure black and white image: every pixel becomes a shade of gray.

Is my image uploaded?+
For JPG, PNG and WebP, no. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the image never leaves your device. (Formats the browser can't open are processed privately on our engine and deleted after 1 hour.)
Black & white vs grayscale?+
This makes a true grayscale image (the full range of grays), which is what people usually mean by 'black and white' for a photo, rather than a pure two-tone (1-bit) image.
Will the size change?+
Often a little smaller, since there's no colour information. The dimensions stay exactly the same.

How does it turn an image to grayscale?+
Each pixel's gray is a weighted mix of its colours: 29.9 percent red, 58.7 percent green and 11.4 percent blue, the standard luminance weights. Green counts most because the eye is most sensitive to it, so the gray looks as bright as the colour did.
