Common questions

What kind of links work?+

Use a direct public link to a file, or a public media page from YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, Twitch, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, Dailymotion, Mixcloud, or Bandcamp. Private, login-only, age-restricted, and DRM-protected media are not supported.

Is this legal?+

Convert files you own or have the rights to. Public, direct content only: FileWhirl does not bypass DRM, paywalls, logins or age gates, so private or protected media simply won't download.

Do I need to download the file first?+

No. That's the point. Paste the link and we fetch it server-side, convert it, and give you the result. Nothing to download-then-reupload.

Is there a Chrome extension?+

Yes. A lightweight launcher. Right-click any link or media element and choose “Convert with FileWhirl”, and it opens this page pre-filled with that link. The extension never converts anything itself; the site does, with the same safeguards.

How big can the file be?+

Up to 2 GB per link on the free tier, and it must finish within a few minutes. Files and their results are auto-deleted after 1 hour.
