Worked example
Cutting 30 seconds out of a song
We cut a 3 minute, 320 kbps MP3 of 7,202,524 bytes from 1:00 to 1:30. The cut came back as an MP3 of exactly 30.000 seconds and 480,905 bytes, re-encoded at 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz stereo, in 190 milliseconds on our engine.
Measured on 19 October 2026 by running the conversion engine this page uses on our own test files.
What it does not do
It does not keep a 320 kbps MP3 at 320 kbps: an MP3 cut at 44.1 or 48 kHz is re-encoded at 128 kbps for stereo and 64 kbps for mono, and lower at a lower sample rate. It does not keep 24 bit audio in a WAV: the cut comes back as a 16 bit WAV.
Common questions
Can I make a ringtone?+
Yes. Cut the section you want (most phones want under 30 to 40 seconds). For an iPhone .m4r, convert the trimmed result afterwards.
Does it re-compress the MP3?+
Yes. The cut is re-encoded as an MP3 so the start and end land exactly where you set them: at 44.1 or 48 kHz it comes back at 128 kbps for stereo and 64 kbps for mono, and lower at a lower sample rate. We measured it: a 320 kbps MP3 cut from 0:10 to 0:30 came back as a 20.000 second, 128 kbps MP3 at the same 44.1 kHz stereo. That is plenty for a ringtone, a voice clip or a podcast quote; if you need the full original bitrate for music, keep your original file as well.
Can I cut audio without losing quality?+
Yes, if you start from FLAC or a 16 bit WAV. Those cuts come back lossless, in the same format: in our test a 16 bit WAV came back as 16 bit PCM WAV and a FLAC as FLAC, both exactly 20.000 seconds. A 24 bit WAV comes back as a 16 bit WAV, so use FLAC to keep 24 bits. MP3 and M4A cuts at 44.1 or 48 kHz are re-encoded at about 128 kbps for stereo and 64 to 70 kbps for mono.
How exact is the cut?+
To the sample. In our test the cut file was exactly as long as the span we asked for. Times can be typed as minutes and seconds (1:05), hours, minutes and seconds (1:02:05) or plain seconds (65.5).
How do I cut off just the start?+
Change only the start time. The end box is filled in with the full length of the file when it loads, so the cut runs to the end of the file.
Can I remove a part from the middle?+
Not in one step: the cutter keeps one span. Cut the part before and the part after as two files, then put them back together with the Audio joiner.
Does it keep the song title and album art?+
The title and artist tags were kept in our test. The album art was not: the cut MP3 has no cover image, so add it back in your music app if you need it.

What quality is the cut MP3?+
An MP3 cut at 44.1 or 48 kHz, the usual sample rates, is re-encoded at 128 kbps for stereo and 64 kbps for mono, whatever the bitrate of the original. That is clear for a ringtone, a voice clip or a quote. For a cut with no loss at all, start from a FLAC or a 16 bit WAV: those come back in the same lossless format. A 24 bit WAV comes back as a 16 bit WAV.
