Common questions
Does this change the speed as well?+
No, and that is the entire point of the tool. Playing a recording faster raises its pitch and shortens it — the two normally move together. Here the length is held still and only the pitch moves, so a three-minute song is still three minutes.
What is a semitone?+
One step on a piano keyboard, black keys included. Twelve semitones make an octave, which is exactly double or half the frequency — so +12 makes a 440 Hz note into 880 Hz. The range here is a full octave in each direction.
Why does it sound a bit odd at the extremes?+
Shifting pitch means stretching the sound and then compressing it back in time, and the further you push it the more that shows. Small moves of a few semitones are close to transparent; a full octave on speech will sound processed. That is the honest limit of doing it this way, not a bug.
Can I use it to change a singer's key?+
Yes — that is the common use. Shift the backing track by the number of semitones between the original key and the one you want. It moves everything in the file together, so the track stays in tune with itself.
