A better JPEG that the web ignored
JPEG 2000 was genuinely ahead of its time: sharper compression, a lossless mode, support for huge images. It found a home in places that care about archival quality, like libraries, hospitals and government scans. What it never got was browser support, so a .jp2 file tends to sit there refusing to open. PNG stores every pixel exactly (lossless), so there's no added quality loss. Transparent areas are currently filled with solid black. The trade-off is a larger file than a lossy format like JPG, great for graphics, screenshots and further editing, less so for photos you want kept small.
