Ebook tools

Every ebook tool, in one place.

Move a book between EPUB, Kindle and PDF, open an old FictionBook or comic archive, and turn a Word or text file into an ebook. Each tool below says in one line what it does; the guide underneath helps you pick the right format for your reader.

Choosing the right tool

Which ebook format does your reader want?

EPUB is the open standard. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, PocketBook and most reading apps open it directly, and Amazon's Send to Kindle service accepts it too. If you are not sure which format to keep, keep EPUB.

AZW3, also called KF8, is Amazon's current Kindle format, and it keeps more of a book's styling than MOBI. MOBI is the older Kindle format: choose it only for an early Kindle or an app that reads nothing else. FB2, FictionBook, is common for books from Russian language libraries and is read by few Western devices, so converting it to EPUB or MOBI is usually the first step.

Reflowing text or fixed pages

An EPUB or Kindle book reflows: the reader picks the text size and the words rewrap to fit the screen. A PDF has fixed pages, which is right for printing but means zooming and scrolling on a phone.

Converting a PDF to EPUB or MOBI extracts its text and rebuilds it as a reflowing book. That works well for a novel or a report made mostly of paragraphs. A PDF built from columns, sidebars, tables or scanned pages has no single reading order to recover, so check the result and keep the PDF as well.

How the conversions are made

Ebook to ebook and ebook to PDF conversions run on Calibre, the open source library manager, and so do CBZ and CBR comic archives, whose pages become PDF pages in order. Word and plain text files become EPUB with pandoc, which turns headings into the book's chapters.

Only books without DRM can be converted. A book bought from a store is often locked to that store's apps, and no converter can open it; that is a limit of the file, not of the tool.

Privacy and limits

Every conversion on this page runs on FileWhirl's own server, and uploads are deleted after 1 hour. Each tool's own page says where its file goes, nothing is passed to a third party converter, and there is no watermark.

Free covers 10 server conversions a day, up to 100 MB a file. Pro removes the daily limit and raises the file limit to 2 GB.
