Why convert a photo to GIF

Most people want GIF for animation, but some places still need a static GIF: older forum software, email templates, legacy content systems and some signature tools. This page covers that case.

What to expect from the colours

A palette of 256 colours suits graphics far better than photos. Expect a photo to look slightly posterised up close. The file may also be larger than the JPG, because GIF compression is built for flat colour, not for photographs.

Better options for the web

If the destination accepts it, WebP or JPG stays sharper and smaller. Use GIF only when the destination truly requires it.

How it works

  1. 01

    Upload your JPG

Drop a file or pick one from your device. Private by default.

  2. 02

    Convert with libvips

The photo is quantised to a 256-colour palette and saved as a GIF.

  3. 03

    Download

    Grab your GIF.

Open-source libvips engine

JPG to GIF

Both are raster image formats, so this re-encodes the pixels from JPG into GIF. File size and quality follow the target format's compression. We keep the visible result as close to the original as GIF allows.

Common questions

Is it free?+

Yes. Convert JPG to GIF free. No signup and no watermark. Free covers 10 server conversions a day, up to 100 MB a file. Pro removes the daily limit and raises the file limit to 2 GB.

Is my file private?+

Your file is uploaded to a private bucket, converted on our own engine, and auto-deleted after 1 hour. It is never sent to a third-party converter.

Can I make an animated GIF here?+

This converter turns one JPG into one still GIF. To make an animation, use the GIF maker, or convert a video clip with MP4 to GIF.

Why does the GIF look different?+

GIF holds at most 256 colours, while a JPG photo can hold millions. Skies and skin tones can show banding or dithering. That is a limit of the format, not of the converter.
