From a photo to an icon

Browsers still look for /favicon.ico, and Windows uses ICO for application, shortcut and folder icons. If your logo or picture is a JPG, this gives you a file those places accept directly.

Crop it square first

Icons are square and shown very small. Crop the JPG to a square around the part that matters, keep the shape simple, and it will still read at 16 pixels in a browser tab.

Size change

An ICO holds several images at once, so it is usually larger than a small JPG of the same picture. It is still small enough to serve as a favicon.

How it works

  1. 01

    Upload your JPG

Drop a file or pick one from your device. Private by default.

  2. 02

    Convert with Pillow

Pillow writes an ICO that holds 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel versions, up to the size of your image.

  3. 03

    Download

    Grab your ICO.

Open-source Pillow engine

JPG to ICO

Both are raster image formats, so this re-encodes the pixels from JPG into ICO. File size and quality follow the target format's compression. We keep the visible result as close to the original as ICO allows.

Common questions

Is it free?+

Yes. Convert JPG to ICO free. No signup and no watermark. Free covers 10 server conversions a day, up to 100 MB a file. Pro removes the daily limit and raises the file limit to 2 GB.

Is my file private?+

Your file is uploaded to a private bucket, converted on our own engine, and auto-deleted after 1 hour. It is never sent to a third-party converter.

What size should my JPG be?+

Use a square image of at least 256 by 256 pixels. The icon gets every standard size up to the size of your image, so a small JPG gives fewer sizes. A non-square JPG keeps its shape, so the icon comes out rectangular.

Will the icon have a transparent background?+

No. JPG has no transparency, so the icon keeps the JPG's background. For a transparent icon, start from artwork that has no background and remove the background before you convert.
