Convert BMP to ICO.
Turn a BMP bitmap into a Windows icon or a website favicon.ico, with the standard icon sizes built in.
Old artwork, new icon
BMP is the classic Windows bitmap, and plenty of old icon artwork and screenshots still live in it. Converting to ICO gives you a file you can set as a shortcut or folder icon, or drop at the root of a website as favicon.ico.
Pixel art stays sharp
Each icon size is scaled down from your bitmap with a high-quality filter. If you drew the art at a small size by hand, start from that exact size so nothing is scaled.
Size change
BMP is uncompressed, so the ICO is often smaller than the source, even though it holds several sizes.
How it works
- 01
Upload your BMP
Drop a file or pick one from your device. Private by default.
- 02
Convert with Pillow
Pillow writes an ICO that holds 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel versions, up to the size of your image.
- 03
Download
Grab your ICO.
Standard sizes from 16 to 256 pixels in one file
Works as favicon.ico and as a Windows icon
Private uploads, auto-deleted after 1 hour
No watermark, no signup to try
Open-source Pillow engine
BMP to ICO
Both are raster image formats, so this re-encodes the pixels from BMP into ICO. File size and quality follow the target format's compression. We keep the visible result as close to the original as ICO allows.
Common questions
Is it free?+
Yes. Convert BMP to ICO free. No signup and no watermark. Free covers 10 server conversions a day, up to 100 MB a file. Pro removes the daily limit and raises the file limit to 2 GB.
Is my file private?+
Your file is uploaded to a private bucket, converted on our own engine, and auto-deleted after 1 hour. It is never sent to a third-party converter.
What size should my BMP be?+
Use a square bitmap of at least 256 by 256 pixels. The icon gets every standard size up to the size of your image, so a 64 pixel BMP gives sizes up to 64. A non-square BMP keeps its shape, so the icon comes out rectangular.
Does transparency carry over?+
No. The icon is written without an alpha channel, so a 32-bit BMP with transparent areas loses them. For a transparent icon, use PNG to ICO from artwork with a transparent background.
