Common questions
Should I crop or pad?+
Crop if the subject is near the middle and filling the frame matters — it looks native on a phone, at the cost of the edges. Pad if the whole picture matters, such as a screen recording, a chart or anything with text near the sides. There is no option that does both: something has to give, which is why the tool asks rather than choosing for you.
How much do I lose cropping a widescreen clip to 9:16?+
About two thirds of the width. Going from 16:9 to 9:16 keeps a tall strip out of the middle of the frame, so anyone standing off to one side will be cut out entirely. Check the result before posting it — this is the single most common surprise with vertical conversion, and it is the format doing what it must, not a fault.
Does padding hurt quality?+
No. Padding adds black around the existing picture and leaves every original pixel where it was. The file gets slightly larger because the frame is bigger, but nothing is scaled down or re-cropped.
Will the video still play everywhere?+
Yes. The output is standard H.264 in the same container, and the dimensions are forced to even numbers because that is what the codec requires — an odd width fails deep inside the encoder with an error that never mentions aspect ratio.
