Common questions
Will this slow my video down or speed it up?+
No. Frames are duplicated or dropped to reach the new rate, so the clip still runs for the same length of time. That is the difference between converting a frame rate and reinterpreting one: telling a player that a 60 fps clip was always 30 fps makes it play at half speed and run twice as long. This does the conversion properly.
Which frame rate should I choose?+
24 is the film convention and the usual choice for anything meant to look cinematic. 25 is the PAL broadcast standard used across Europe and Australia. 30 is the safe default for the web and most phone footage. 60 is for smooth motion — gameplay, sport, screen recordings.
Does going from 30 to 60 make it smoother?+
Not really. Doubling the rate duplicates each frame rather than inventing motion between them, so it is smoother only in the sense that the file claims a higher rate. Going the other way — 60 down to 30 — genuinely discards frames and makes a smaller file. Raising the rate is mostly useful for matching other footage in an edit.
Will the file get smaller?+
Usually, if you lower the rate — fewer frames means less to encode. Raising it will generally make the file bigger for no extra detail.
