Rescue old Windows audio

WMA was the default format for CDs ripped in Windows Media Player. Macs, phones and most audio editors no longer play it. A WAV works everywhere.

Edit without another loss

Decoding to WAV once means every later cut, fade or export works on the same samples, instead of decoding the WMA again each time.

Size change

WAV is uncompressed, so expect about 10 MB a minute for stereo, many times the size of the WMA.

How it works

  1. 01

    Upload your WMA

Drop a file or pick one from your device. Private by default.

  2. 02

    Decode with ffmpeg

ffmpeg decodes the WMA and writes 16-bit PCM WAV at the original sample rate.

  3. 03

    Download

    Grab your WAV.

16-bit PCM WAV, opens everywhere

Title and artist tags carried over

Private uploads, auto-deleted after 1 hour

No watermark, no signup to try

Open-source ffmpeg engine

WMA to WAV: no added loss

WAV is a lossless format, so encoding into it adds no further quality loss. Note that if WMA was already lossy (like MP3 or AAC), detail discarded earlier can't be brought back. The WAV is faithful to the WMA, just larger.

Common questions

Is it free?+

Yes. Convert WMA to WAV free. No signup and no watermark. Free covers 10 server conversions a day, up to 100 MB a file. Pro removes the daily limit and raises the file limit to 2 GB.

Is my file private?+

Your file is uploaded to a private bucket, converted on our own engine, and auto-deleted after 1 hour. It is never sent to a third-party converter.

Can it convert protected WMA files?+

No. WMA files bought from old download stores can carry DRM, and those cannot be converted. Unprotected WMA files, including ripped CDs, convert normally.

Will it sound better than the WMA?+

No. The WAV keeps exactly what the WMA decodes to, without further loss, but it cannot restore detail the WMA encoder removed.
