Common questions

Are my files uploaded?+

No. Flattening happens entirely in your browser with a local PDF engine, so a completed form — often full of personal details — never leaves your device. Most online flatten tools upload it to their servers first.

What does flattening actually do?+

A filled PDF form keeps your answers in separate interactive fields sitting on top of the page. Flattening draws those values into the page itself and removes the fields, so the document looks the same but can no longer be edited, cleared or re-filled.

Why would I flatten a form?+

So the version you send on is the version they see. It stops answers being changed after you sign off, stops a viewer offering to 'reset form', and fixes the common problem where filled values look blank in some PDF readers.

Is this the same as protecting or redacting?+

No. Flattening locks the answers in; it doesn't add a password and it doesn't remove content. Use Protect PDF for a password, or Redact PDF when text must genuinely be removed.

What if my PDF has no form fields?+

Then there is nothing to flatten, and we tell you so rather than handing back an identical file. A PDF with no fields is already fixed content.

Is there a limit?+
