When this makes sense

Some audio libraries, sample packs and editing workflows require FLAC for everything. Converting an MP3 lets it sit alongside the rest of the collection, and editing a FLAC avoids a new round of MP3 compression on every save.

What it cannot do

Lost detail cannot be recovered. If you have the original CD rip or WAV, convert that to FLAC instead.

Size change

Expect the FLAC to be several times the size of the MP3, depending on the MP3 bitrate.

How it works

  1. 01

    Upload your MP3

Drop a file or pick one from your device. Private by default.

  2. 02

    Encode with ffmpeg

ffmpeg decodes the MP3 and encodes it losslessly as FLAC.

  3. 03

    Download

    Grab your FLAC.

MP3 to FLAC: no added loss

FLAC is a lossless format, so encoding into it adds no further quality loss. Note that if MP3 was already lossy (like MP3 or AAC), detail discarded earlier can't be brought back. The FLAC is faithful to the MP3, just larger.

Common questions

Is it free?+

Yes. Convert MP3 to FLAC free. No signup and no watermark. Free covers 10 server conversions a day, up to 100 MB a file. Pro removes the daily limit and raises the file limit to 2 GB.

Is my file private?+

Your file is uploaded to a private bucket, converted on our own engine, and auto-deleted after 1 hour. It is never sent to a third-party converter.

Does FLAC make my MP3 sound better?+

No. FLAC preserves exactly what it is given, and an MP3 has already lost detail. The FLAC sounds identical to the MP3. It only prevents any further loss.

Why is the FLAC so much bigger?+

FLAC stores the decoded audio losslessly, which takes several times the space of a compressed MP3.
